Before planting

  • Allow for a large, wide plant unless you choose a compact cultivar and commit to regular pruning.
  • Leaves, stems and seed kernels are harmful if eaten; keep cut material away from children and pets.
  • Dense roots and fast growth can make an established hedge difficult to remove or reduce.

Why choose it

  • Creates a dense evergreen screen relatively quickly.
  • Tolerates shade and a broad range of ordinary garden soils.

Care

  • Water regularly during establishment, then deeply during prolonged dry periods.
  • Trim hedges in late spring or early summer and remove all clippings.
  • Monitor for leaf spot, powdery mildew and damaged leaves.
