Before planting

  • Choose partial or dappled shade and fertile, neutral to alkaline soil. Avoid waterlogged spots and shelter plants from cold, drying winds.
  • Allow about 0.3–0.6 m in height and 0.4–0.8 m in width for typical garden forms. Size and flower colour vary with the cultivar.

Why choose it

  • Flowers bring colour before many other perennials wake up; their timing depends on the cultivar and local weather.
  • Divided, leathery leaves complement spring bulbs and shade perennials. Foliage often lasts through mild winters.

Care

  • Water while plants establish and during dry spells. Renew organic mulch yearly, keeping it clear of the crown.
  • Remove old or damaged leaves as the flower stems emerge, taking care around the new buds.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed where possible. Remove unwanted seedlings, whose flowers may differ from those of the parent.

Good to know

  • These are garden hybrids, distinct from the species Helleborus orientalis.
  • All parts are harmful if eaten; contact may irritate skin. Wear gloves and prevent children and pets from eating any part.
