Before planting

  • Choose sun for the best flowering; light shade is tolerated. Use well-drained soil that retains some moisture, avoiding permanently wet sites.
  • Common garden forms reach about 0.5–1.5 m high and wide. Check the cultivar’s dimensions before choosing spacing or a position near paths.

Why choose it

  • Small flowers open in succession from early summer into autumn, depending on the cultivar and climate.
  • Its rounded shape and finely divided leaves work well in low flowering hedges, borders and mixed shrub plantings.

Care

  • Water regularly while plants establish. Established shrubs tolerate short dry spells, but need water during prolonged drought.
  • In late winter or early spring, remove some of the oldest stems at the base to renew an ageing or crowded shrub.

Good to know

  • Potentilla fruticosa is the familiar botanical synonym of Dasiphora fruticosa; both names refer to this shrub.
  • The typical species has yellow flowers; garden cultivars also offer white, pink and orange shades. Winter leaf loss is normal.
