Before planting
- Choose sun or partial shade and soil that drains effectively.

- The leaf stalks have spines. Leave space beside paths and keep the plant away from children's play areas.

- Once established in the ground it tolerates drought better than a young plant; water pots according to compost moisture and weather.

- A small container specimen does not show the eventual width of a clump grown for years in warm ground.
