Tree

Norway maple ‘Globosum’

Acer platanoides 'Globosum'

A Norway maple cultivar with a dense crown, initially rounded and becoming broader and flatter with age. Usually sold as a grafted standard. Despite its regular outline, it needs room for a crown several metres across.

Before planting

  • Allow space for a crown about 5–7 m wide. A spherical habit does not make this a miniature tree for very narrow passages.
  • Check the trunk and graft height. Total tree height also includes the crown, which continues to grow.
  • Choose sun or partial shade with well-drained soil that retains moderate moisture.

Why choose it

  • Its regular crown creates an orderly feature without constant clipping into a ball.
  • The leaves give seasonal interest and may turn yellow in autumn.

Care

  • Water young trees during establishment and prolonged drought.
  • Routine hard shaping is unnecessary. Remove damaged branches and shoots growing below the graft union.

Good to know

  • Older crowns become broader and flatter and may no longer form a perfect sphere.
  • Acer platanoides is invasive in parts of North America. Check local restrictions before planting outside its native range.
